About me: Stephen Hitchings
Welcome to my website.
My name is Stephen Hitchings, and I live in Sydney, Australia. For 38 years I was a high school science teacher, and a keen science fiction reader
Now, having retired from teaching, I am establishing myself as a writer. Not a well-known writer yet, but I am planning to change that. At the moment I write mainly young adult science fiction and a bit of fantasy, but I hope to expand into other genres if my brain holds together for a few more years.
I have always been in love with words, and especially with this crazy, confusing, contradictory English language, even with all its faults and irregularities. My love for words has led me to a variety of results:
- A love of science fiction.
- A love of great literature, especially from the 19th century.
- A love of puns (my daughter hates this).
- When I write, I try to make the language sound delicious – though this is much harder than it sounds.
I started writing, as far as I can remember, at the age of 9. (Yes, I know, that was a long time ago.) It was my ambition to become a full-time writer, but somehow I ended up going to university and becoming a teacher. The only book I have published so far was in fact a short biology text book. My main teaching subject was biology, and so I have a particular interest in stories about biological subjects.
My first novel, titled A Speck in the Ocean, will be published soon, probably in July or August this year. Please have a look at the teaser trailer (for want of a better name) for this book. I think it’s going to be a great book. I hope you agree.
This website was meant to be completed months ago, but I have had quite a few problems, and I’m still learning to do many things. For people of my generation, things are a lot harder now than the days when you only had to write a book and send it to a publisher.
If you have any suggestions about improving my website, I’d love to hear them. Just use the form on the contact page.
